McLaren Fires Up 2026 Power Unit as New F1 Era Begins

McLaren has taken its first concrete step toward the 2026 Formula 1 season, successfully firing up the power unit of its next-generation challenger.

The Woking-based outfit enters the new campaign as reigning back-to-back constructors’ champions, a feat it achieved for the first time in 34 years, and will also run the iconic number one after Lando Norris claimed the drivers’ title last season.

However, questions remain over whether McLaren can extend its dominance as Formula 1 heads into the most dramatic regulation reset in its history, with the spotlight firmly on the new power unit rules.

From 2026, power will be split evenly between internal combustion and electrical output, placing a premium on energy management. The removal of the MGU-H and the increased reliance on the MGU-K add further complexity to an already challenging technical landscape.

McLaren continues its long-standing partnership with Mercedes, widely expected to deliver the benchmark power unit under the new regulations. Early signs appear promising, with team principal Andrea Stella visibly pleased as the car burst into life, a moment the team shared on social media as excitement builds for the new era.
